If they spent 1 more hour at Tom Bombadil's house I was going to rip my book in half

This is how I felt about all the "let's rebuild society guys!" bits in The Stand that were not directly related to kicking Randall Flagg's butt.

My wife and I have gone back and forth on this. The movies were already very long, and at some point the director has to be judicious in choosing what to leave out. Tom was important in the grander scheme, but leaving him out of the movies didn't leave a gaping hole in the plot line. At some point you have to say it's a different medium and that brings its own special constraints. I tend towards being a purist, but I understand why you have to make changes.

But if you want to talk about something which really should have been included, how about the scouring of the Shire?

It's 1,086 pages. I call shenanigans on a literal interpretation of ripping the book in half.

me too, exactly. i love hearing covers and seeing remakes/reinvisionings/adaptations because it's so much fun to me to see how someone else interpreted the same thing i read or saw or heard.

when we were doing the pun thread the other day, "nothing compares 2 u" came up, and i found this cover and lost half my night listening to it on repeat. literally the same song, and as heart wrenching as the other versions are, it feels so much different. not just because he's dead, but his voice changes it completely

I remember when they announced they were doing The Stand, then it somehow turned into doing the Dark Tower series. I still hope they circle back some day.

Good morning everyone and Happy New Year! I hope 2019 brings you whatever it is you want out of life. I too am going to get a little sappy and say thanks for all of the help you offer. I don't post a lot but I'm here a lot and always entertained by the laughs and goings on.

Just popping in to say hi before I have my surgery tomorrow. I'll be taking some days off from slinging surveys to rest. Hope the requesters come back in full force this week and you all make bank!

Also I wanted to wish a happy birthday to @A6_Foul_Out ! Hope you have an awesome day!

I absolutely refuse to watch the Dark Tower movie. Not because it's a movie adaptation alone, but because they tried to merge like the entire series into a single movie. There's a limit to "artistic reinterpretation" and that director went way past it. Same with that awful guy who said "hey, let's turn one of the most beloved children's cartoons of all time into a live action movie, what could go wrong?"

No need for it. Plus it gives a lot of people the right to Grinch "Hey I read this in the book and it's not there REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" so it worked in that sense. Personally I didn't really care much for it in the book.

That's ok, really good fiction is not for everyone. It's pretty big of you to admit it, and at least give it a try, I have a lot of admiration for that. I didn't really enjoy the Bible but I read it because well it's the Bible and you pretty much have to to understand just about anything.

Unless you go around in life like zombie or one of those guys like Girt in Diablo, which is just a computer-controlled charater with no mind or soul. I don't look down on that, Girt was an important part of the setting.

No no no no NO! This, I am passionate about. It is ONE book. Tolkien was very clear on this, and dreadfully upset that the publishers made him split it into three parts. That was only done to make it more palatable for sales. Fellowship, Two Towers, and Return of the King are purely arbitrary delineations and the whole concept made J.R.R. quite grumpy.

idc about this, 11 year old me was not about to tote around a 1000 page book to every class to read instead of doing classwork. I mean, I actually did that with Shannara, but I have my limits.

Yes this is the way I typically think about it. I had to come to terms with this as a kid when the first Potter movie was a disappointment. All of this makes me sound sour but It's hard not to get your hopes up even a little for an accurate book to movie adaptation. At least I know not to bother watching Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher after all of the casting drama.

Skin color don't matter as long as the actual actress is good is my stance on it. Also I still absolute adore the first Harry Potter movie, but the older I get, the less I like the series overall, which I think is just growing up and being less able to empathize with teenage protagonists.
