I don't think its worth arguing over, but I do think minimum should be the highest state minimum wage of the participant pool for anything approved by an IRB, but that's just me :dunno:

If they can't find a way to pay that, the research probably isn't worth printing on toilet paper.

I disagree personally. I think so long as they aim to pay at least 20 cents a minute, that's a reasonable rate for the type of online work. It would be nice if all of them would agree to do that, but on here I'm pretty content if I'm getting $4 for a 15 minute survey. But the thing that was ironic about the response was he started raging at me, when the person above me was recommending they pay $6 an hour lol.

Yeah, I agree with your con a lot. It's always kinda disappointing when you can tell they're not asking proper control questions and clearly going to present this as proof of something that it isn't indeed proof of.

My only problem is, without trying to get into a political debate, or even any form of debate, I just think it's kind of unreasonable to expect a lot of students to be able to secure funding to pay $15 an hour to people to take surveys online. Some of the richer colleges wouldn't have a problem, but not everyone is a Berkeley or a Harvard.

For me its more about value than "reason".

If I was just trying to pump out some garbage 30c survey about granola bars for my thesis then you can bet I'd pay the least I can get by on. But I'm not on that side of the table.

Plus a lot of these studies are funded in a way where the vast majority of the value goes straight down the pisser to various "costs" ancillary to the actual study. Plus the researchers are building their "brand" in their industry off it, and as noted above sometimes with questionable methods.

The least we could do is demand some serious value out of the equation, which is where I think a lot of those reddit threads take the wrong perspective. Its annoying that the "negotiation" (such as it is) always starts at the bottom with "well, you could probably pay as little as $2!"

Thats bass ackwards way of approaching it IMO. Not so much so that I'd ever bother going to reddit to Grinch at someone else, usually I'll just drop my 2c & eat the downvotes or w/e if I think its worth it lol but that's my POV at least.
Do you think its reasonable for us to take the hit (pun intended) in this situation though? That student is going to build a major part of their life off this exchange, if they can take out a loan to pay for the tuition they should find a way to pay for workers time as well. Its not like you can't know that across 4 years of a degree you may need to publish or w/e & plan accordingly.

You make some pretty valid points too. Obviously, I'd love for them to pay us what we're actually worth. I just know that it could never happen, especially when I see people on TO posting things like "I stayed the course of this awful hit just because I wanted to make sure I got my $1. 45 minutes for $1!" My whole thing is these people more than likely checked TO, they saw people giving them 5/5 for 10 cents a minute, and were debating how low they could get away with it. So I always say "Yeah, you'll probably find workers paying that, but they'll probably not actually give you good data." and push them towards something a bit more fair.
