Yes, a few times and so have friends of mine.

I have never had a doc give me grief about that. Even in the same HMO. I have seen several different specialists for the exact same issue (some at my request) and no one gives me grief for seeking out a wider knowledge base.

I think it's in how you approach the second or third doc. Just let them know that you're seeking as much information as possible to make the best decision possible and as each doctor has their own experience with treating patients over the years, every single doctor will give you unique information that you find very valuable.

 

Being in good health is way more important than coming off as a pain imo. They should let you sign to transfer your medical records to wherever you are going as well.

 

Multiple times! Once you request your files, they HAVE to give you them anyway. It's not as if your old doctor can refuse. I've changed docs numerous times without any fuss. I mean, I got a few dirty looks or whatever, but oh well!

So when you're getting up there you see way more docs than you did when you're younger, thus have way more opportunity to seek out second opinions

IRL? Yes and NO.
I sought a second opinion from a doctor in the same Hospital and I couldn't care less how my first doc felt about it. Your health is more important than what a Doctor thinks of you. No one will care more about your health or look out for your own interests better than you. I straight out told my doc I was getting a second opinion. What's he gonna do ? Not take my money?

 

Be the very same PITA that you originally went to the doctor for.

Yes. When I crushed my wrist, after 3 surgeries, I told insurance I wasn't going back. I wound up going to Louisville to have it fixed as best they could after the first three screwups. The first doctor kept saying I needed more physical therapy. Now, the Louisville doc did the best he could with what he had to work with, but I can no longer twist my wrist side to side or move it up and down completely. He finally had to cut the nerves in my wrist to keep the pain at bay. So yes, a second opinion is well worth it.

 

Id like a second opinion on my colonoscopy please. No need to pull my previous medical records, just get in there again. Please.

My main doc, who worked at the hospital I would usually be at: it's probably related to your other health stuff, you don't need to see a GI specialist. Shut up and don't question me.

Me the next time I was in the ER from intractable vomiting: I think I need a second opinion and a gi consult please.

The Er doc: Totally. It seems like you nearly die from vomiting your guts up a lot.

The Gi doc: Why didn't they send you to me 4 years ago? Here's a pill and a treatment plan, and you will only vomit like twice a day now max.

My main doc: I might have been wrong.

Me 2 years later: not hospitalized monthly
