I've never understood this. (I say this but when I am sick I still come in just because I don't want to look like a little Grinch. I also sit away from everyone else who are in cubicals) But if you're truly super contagious, there's just no reason why you should come in and get everyone else sick... especially if you're in close quarters.

I happen to be working from home today because I'm sick and don't want to spread my germs. But I also have a ~60 minute commute each way, so that makes the decision slightly easier. Even if you're in an office and can shut the door and don't have to have meetings, you still have to go to the restroom, get a cup of tea or coffee, open the door to get in the building, etc. - every surface you touch is another point to spread germs.

It also doesn't hurt that my company is generally very amenable to people telecommuting as needed (just not habitually), and I've been working for them for a lo-o-o-ng time.
