So way back when early gaming systems (Atari) were released, commercials actually features boys and girls together. In the 80's though, there was a big push from retailers and manufactures to split the toy aisle into boy and girl toys. By the time Nintendo released their first console, they had to figure out which "side" of the aisle to market to in order to get placed on a shelf, so they went with boys. Ever since then, ads changed dramatically to really sell boys on games, and they just stopped featuring girls.

 

I wish my fiance would play video games with me. It's one of those things I am really good at and wish she could share the experience with me. Instead her hobbies include Real Housewives and Vanderpump Rules.

Yep. I have a teenage daughter and she really enjoys some games (Overwatch, etc.). She and some of her friends also recently started playing old school Dungeons & Dragons (I volunteered to be the dungeon master so she could enjoy the adventure with her friends), and although I don't necessarily think of this as quite so marginalized for girls these days, I'm still glad that she is following her passion of science, taking advanced algebra and science classes this year, and plans to take AP Physics next year.

 

I didn't mean to say money was the prime motivating factor excsulively for females although I kinda worded it like that. My bad , guys and gals. But money is obviously motivation for everyone. But I don't think people making money playing video games leads to more people just starting to play video games for that reason. Maybe there is a handful of people who pick up video game playing solely to make money online through apps. But all in all, I can't help but to think most people who play just play for the inherit love of the hobby itself

Probably easier to talk about something less political like the surveys where you chose between the salad and the cupcake. You can make all the manipulations you want in the survey and I'm betting there's a ton of people (me) who click the salad but then walk into my kitchen and eat a cupcake because obvious reasons

In that same vein, sure people will click Lakeisha, but that same person ends up hiring the cupcake. Survey is just dumb all around
