    It makes a key execute an action (binds key->action) that isn't the default to the key.

    So press 1 and instead of typing the number 1 your computer instead clicks on a button. So on & so forth.

    Just a way for a user to tell the computer to do something that it normally wouldn't with a button, gesture, etc to make the user's life easier when that action doesn't exist by default
