I gotta say, I'm real annoyed by these new attention checks. The ones where you have to choose which is the term for correct high school year. I was homeschooled and I can just never remember which one is the right one and I'm pretty sure I just got screened out of a survey because I chose the wrong one.

Oh I didn't mean to give the impression I'm not a peasant. Now I'm just a picky peasant. When the rich people throw food down at us I look for slightly rotten blueberries instead of grains of rice.

 

I'm lucky to have done fine with them, but I definitely think they assume an unfair set of cultural knowledge sometimes. The US is pretty vast and not everyone's experience encompasses what might be considered baseline knowledge of Fourth of July cookouts, for example. There are also some truly ambiguous ones! My parents both grew up speaking British English, which occasionally pops up in my own vocabulary, and each time I see the eggplant question I want to answer -mod edit- out of pure pluck.

 

I like how some of the newer surveys on mturk lead you to a Prolific Academy error page with no code upon completion instead of just no code. Nice change of pace
