Yes, automated responses are a problem for us. The attention checks are our first line of defence and allow us to quickly filter out a great many "motivated individuals" who took the time to write very naïve scripts (or I guess who slogged through the HITs manually, clicking on responses at random). Beyond that we have some other tools we run on the results that we hope catch motivated individuals of a more intelligent variety. But nothing's perfect, and inadvertently approving some spam is a cost of doing business.
