    Dear Dan,

    I have spoken with Ben and he has explained that the people he rejected had such fast response times that it is very unlikely that they actually engaged in the questions. I have asked him to make it clear to respondents on the first page, that response times that suggest this pattern of responding will lead to that outcome, as I do believe that it would have been better to make that very clear to respondents in advance.

    Ben has agreed to look back over the decisions he made regarding this, but his second supervisor and I both support him in not paying where it looks clear that the respondent has not engaged accurately with the material.

    I responded back with the fact that there are some of us who do surveys faster, requested that they overturn the rejection, and pointed out that my next step would have to be to submit a formal complaint to the ethics board.
