You know this has me thinking.

In the Chicago area we have what are called Italian Beefs.

In other areas - they call them French Dips. Presumably a reference to ball dipping

Does this have to do with balls? I know we have deep dish pizzas with the sauce on top so we can dip our balls on them, but I wonder why our sandwiches don't carry on this tradition.

 

They'll be signs propped up everywhere,

"Certified Dip Free!"

"No Dip Zone!"

"USDA Certified without Dip."
