    the worries about it being a scam are because the student could have been funded by their school, didn't use all the funds allotted to them, and want to siphon the money into their own personal account. i tend to side with hanlon's razor, but it is a legitimate possibility. you're not under any obligation (other than moral, depending on how you look at it) to return it, especially because your personal information will be shared with the req (paypal, email, etc) which many people have issues with

    I mean - if you're feeling generous, by all means send it back. However (as @Randomacts noted) bonuses aren't refundable, and I'm sure there's something in the requesters' documentation that explicitly tells them that. If this error were somehow possible in the reverse, I doubt most requesters (including this one) would send back money. I'm 100% they'd hide behind the RAW and decline.

    If they had treated me exceptionally well in the past I might refund them but I would consider that an exceptional act only merited if I really had a relationship with them(like a profitable closed qual)

    Yeah. The only other case I could see is if it was clearly an accident, like "one lucky winner gets a $1.00 bonus!" and you ended up getting a $100, I'd refund it, assuming the requester was a) from an academic institution and willing to provide a contact email to their dean or program director, or b) a requester that is well established, provides consistent work, and is otherwise reasonable.

    In addition to what the other people said: It was $5. They're not going to starve or get in a crapton of trouble for it (unless they double bonused like...everyone)

    You are under no obligation to send anything back to them (And I would wonder if this might fall afoul of amazon's off platform transaction rules or something too)
