I get 1% minimum (higher on some purchases) on one credit card that I use most of the time.

But I'm happy with it as it's a special card tied to my mortgage, so all cash back goes straight to principle automatically, which nets me way more than 1% cash back over time.

Could I go for a higher cash back card, then take that cash back and put it on my principle myself? Sure. But I'd have to get the payout, deposit to checking, pay that on principle, and do that timely so I get the most bang for my cash back since the sooner principle is paid, the less the lifetime interest. With this card it's done automatically for me every time I get to $25. I'm sure I make way better return just letting it do its thing every $25 than if I tried to earn more and do it myself.

tldr; sometimes 1% isn't just 1%

If you have outstanding balances on credit cards all these cash backs things don't matter otherwise 1% going to principle on the card is worth like .5%? I haven't ever done the math but it is less than 1% of value.

Fidelity does a card like that too(not mortgage of course) where you can get 2% cash back, but only in the form of brokerage deposits into a qualified fidelity account. Nice product if you dont mind not seeing your money in the form of actual cash, but great if you just want you cash back to hopefully earn a little more for you.

So on the citi double cash anyone try that one? I have the amazon one and the chase one (because they are my bank and I got $$ for getting the card) but want more cash back on regular purchases that aren't amazon/dining/gas/drugstores..and random quarter ones.

Yeah citi's double cash is for everyone it just is harder to qualify for it than other cards.

I don't know what the APR is like but if you are using credit cards properly APR doesn't matter.
