I was right in that spot where divorce was still super scandalous, too. And the fact my mom peaced out was a huge deal in town. Everyone knew. I lived in a town of 26k and I was still the kid whose mom ran off with another dude and the fact they were getting divorced was so odd to other folks. By the time I got to high school, it was a bit more common, but at the time- hoo boy! I was "that kid."
