Wow, small town? My parents divorced in the early 70s. When I was growing up it was weird to know kids whose parents were still married to each other! It was more normal to be a divorced kid than one with two bio parents still married and living together.

 

Maybe it's just a small town thing because divorce was pretty common when I was a kid. I remember chasing some of the girls from single parents because there was never anyone home.

 

Single mother families were common where I was too. I grew up in a mostly black neighborhood, though.

I lived in a small town (still in the same place actually) and there were only like 2 kids that had divorced parents in my school. Now though, it's the inverse and I think that it is sad.

also from a single parent home, which was super common, but also not common for it to be a single father with no mother in the picture whatsoever since day 1. my poor dad got a fuckton of side eyes, and i got a fuckton of "make sure you tell someone if --" speeches from strangers, and "poor girl, females need a woman" uhh nope, nope we don't, at least no more than we need a father. luckily, the 80s-90s bred sitcoms and movies all about non-nuclear families to normalize it a bit more. full house was my safe space until stupid aunt becky came and broke up the bro fest.

the street i grew up on was full of friends my age and a few years older, and babysitters a few years older than them, so whenever my dad had anything to do he just threw me at the nearest open door and said when he'd be back, or told me i could go home if i needed to but he'd prefer i didn't, and i didn't care one way or the other. it was the definition of "it takes a village" which was pretty cool.

My neighborhood was pretty mixed (San Francisco East Bay Area in the 70s), and most of us lived with our moms and would sometimes see our dads on weekends.

I do recall meeting a friend's parents when I was in, maybe, 2nd grade and being surprised she lived with both her mom and dad, not step mom or step dad.

That's kinda sad

But, I am a single mom, by choice, so single moms can do a pretty good job! I know I've kicked ass at being a mama! My kid is one of the only kids who doesn't have a dad in some capacity, so that's still weird even today, in my parts of California. There have been some fun conversations when someone asks kiddo about his dad and he replies, "I don't have a dad!"

 

Holy cow, thanks! I just had so many weird flashbacks. Might need to get myself some of that stuff and make another chinese staircase.
