It seems to be random on what you get.

Many parents make choices because they feel like they have no power, or feel the need to engage in a power struggle with their kids.

Now, certainly, there are some kids who are holy terrors to raise and it will always be a power struggle, but most kids aren't like that from the beginning (they learn to be that way for the most part, with a few outliers who are just born that way).

My kid learned early on I don't "fight" for power. There are no power struggles in our house because I have the power and won't argue about it.

However.

I am also super fair and will always hear him out and I don't hit or threaten it and I don't humiliate. I don't like it when parents humiliate their children. I am his biggest supporter and cheerleader and my job is to help him grow up into the person he is supposed to be, not some version of who I think he should be to stroke my ego (if that makes sense).

I am my son's safe place. He knows I love and adore him but when it's necessary? I can be strict. I'm lucky, though. He doesn't make it necessary very often.

It sounds outlandish, but it's actually a true story. I thought walking from my room to the bathroom in front of her church group would embarrass her into giving me the door back.. and maybe she was embarrassed, but definitely not as much as I was

I legit never learned. Just constant escalation that I never once got the better end of. In HS the big punishment was losing my computer access.

Start: grounded from the computer for 3 days
Me: Sneak on anyway
Her: takes away mouse/keyboard
Me: Buys a spare
Her: takes away power cord
Me: Ditto (how'd you not see this coming, Mom?)
Her: Turns off the breaker to the entire half of the house I was in so my shower was cold as fuck before school

I never learned how to flip the breaker box lol, but I did move the entire setup to a different room once or twice w/o getting caught. Eventually she realized the computer was utterly useless w/o internet & she'd just yank the modem & toss it in her purse. I stopped fighting at that point b/c the internet was too important

Same terrorism with my LEGOs in elementary/middle (idk?).. I've told @gurlondrums about the carnage there
