So. I absolutely agree with your position on the wages. I have worked for low wages on Mturk due to the fact that I was very scared about my financial situation with my kid. While I do have a full time job, it wasn't paying enough to handle the medical debt we were in and I feared we would just keep slipping further into debt and then my kid would have to take out loans to go to college and be in debt until he's 50 (like I am with my student loans because my parents didn't pay for jack), thus perpetuating the debt cycle unless he gets a really high paying job. I have an education and used to have really high paying jobs, but things have changed. I'm a hard worker who doesn't mind working a second job to meet the financial goals I have for me and my kid, and when I was, literally, terrified when I looked ahead at our future sure I would do crappy penny hits for $3/hour.

All that said.

I am the landlord with someone living in a one car garage illegally and having loud fights that are resulting in calls to me from neighbors. I already rent to agencies that place low income people with disabilities which increases my financial risk. I've already had to come up with a cool $1300 to replace a heater a methhead broke but I couldn't fully prove. That was one of the reasons I had to start turking, and see above for my not so awesome financial situation. Further, should those tenants living in my garage actually cause damage and, oh, burn it down...if I KNOW (which I do now) that someone is living in that garage insurance will NOT cover the damages and rebuild it for me if I cannot prove I took immediate steps to move them out.

so I'd like to respectfully ask, how much of my financial security would you like me to risk to take pity on someone who illegally moved into my garage, when I'm already taking a risk to rent to low income/disabled people (I won't go into full detail, but these people aren't general public low income, they qualify for a program for specific reasons which makes them super high risk, which is why they qualify)? Why doesn't that person go to the agency and ask for help?

Before you shit on landlords who are doing their best to help people, realize we are not all rich, many of us stick our necks out to help people, but I don't want to be a dumbass and lose everything I have built by sticking it out so far my head gets cut off. As you said, the world doesn't owe them shit, and I certainly do not when they have already taken advantage of me and put me at risk.

tl;dr: I'm barely middle class, I turk to make sure my kid won't grow up in debt, I stick my neck out for tenants every single month yet being barely middle class there is only so far I'm willing to go.

This is basically all I was trying to say. We essentially agree. I also think there's a ton of requesters who actually pay well aren't even intending to, they just lack the self awareness of the time it should actually take to complete their work at a satisfactory level. I shouldn't blanket statement the entire platform like that, but I'm just saying a wage standard would likely have way more negatives in the long term for the platform. The less requesters signing up, working, paying, the less amazon cares or puts into servicing the platform = slow death.

Then there's the whole argument that a lot of low paid work can actually be made into gold with a userscript, but I wouldn't know anything about that .
