Shhh, trying to work!

 

Hey mate, nothing I typed was directed at you; just a general sort of rant. The other evening in Remesh, people were putting stuff like $1k/mo gauranteed income and what not, and that just makes me roll my eyes. That, and I was reading yesterday about the government stepping in to disallow in-game purchases for video games. Comments had people applauding the government forcing developers to change their games.

To me, that's just the worst. Having the government solve "problems" like that. Or a mandated minimum wage. Even stuff like OSHA, which folks just figure "Eh, safety's a good thing", can be bad, when it turns into a bunch of hoops homebuilders have to jump through, without any real benefit. I think anyone's that's dealt with government and regulation knows that they love making more of it, to justify their jobs. (Sort of like how Duolingo changed into a candy-nightmare so the graphic designers there could justify their jobs.)

So, anything about how there should be this or that made mandatory on AMT makes me cringe, because it's absolutely, always the wrong way to do things.

Especially when anything is prefaced by a need to make things 'fair'. Life's not fair. Nothing is. And, that's perfectly OK. [Insert Monty Python Always Look On THe Bright Side of Life]

What I'm badly trying to say, without enough coffee, is that I think AMT is fine as it is. We, the workers, really have an advantage, with things like Turkerview (both the forum and the actual ratings) existing. We can choose to educate ourselves and take advantage of these tools --- as well as awesome software like Kad's TKN and MTS, CT's private app, and all the public and free (ooooooh, opensource, who doesn't love that? #systemd) and actually come out ahead.

Personally, I applaud people who are killing it on AMT. Other than the one or two asshats with their "Let's make <some retarded amount of money> a day" posts, the people who nail $400ish a day tend to be pretty humble, as well as incredibly hard-working. In fact, almost everyone who's making bank on AMT is doing it by busting their ass. After all, spoons are only so big, so it's better feeding oneself. I'm never envious of people doing better than me; rather, I'm impressed and inspired by them.

Though, me? I'm obstinate. I refuse to do VRAPIs, for instance, after having seen what they send to their clients. And (at least, I tell myself) I'll never actually do a ScoutIt: That I'll legit see if I can manage to get a job at a fast food place first. (Let them try to keep their appetite after looking at my face.)

I feel I do pretty good for myself: I can pay all my bills and make payments on my crippling medical debt (because of course I don't have health insurance), and even splurge for the occasional Pomona 5250 clip now and then for good clean entertainment. I did 21 of those brain-numbing Percies yesterday and woke up to a $10.50 bonus from them, and another $11 from UNU ($5 for 3rd on the EPL and $6 for the 3 games with ROI). In my world, pour a cup of coffee, scratch my crotch, and look at my monitor and see $21.50 for my PE before I've read my daily Cracked seems like a pretty darn sweet deal.

Which is to say, AMT's fine. As long as there are universities throwing grant money around like monopoly money, we'll have work.

Even if it's $3.20 less a day because RIP JL.
