It's genetic. My mom's been hospitalized for it before. Mine flares up when I'm stressed. And my poor daughter, the school freaks out when hers pops up because she sheds an entire hand's worth of skin like a glove. We use Benadryl for the itching and soak our hands (and feet, in my mom's case) in heavy duty lotion or Vaseline. The added moisture seems to make it heal quicker and crack and bleed less. Steroid creams and ointments never worked for any of us.
