03/31 - Fabulous Friday!

Adults. I live with my parents (who are both disabled and sort of unable to take care of themselves physically) so I'm pretty much their errand girl.

 

Note: I can get away with saying this since Amazon defines me as non-gendered.

 

I so know the feeling I don't have my own "space" I turk from my couch with my laptop. When my child is home, she's 5, I'm constantly up and down and listening to her talk and trying to talk back to her, while also trying to get work done. She can do most things for herself now but I'm still up and down, up and down because she wants food/drink/tape/scissors/paint/playdoh etc. It's hard. Summer vacation is soon and I don't know if I can continue doing this 5 days a week with her home ALL day.

Do what you can to set up a "cubicle". Have talks about you setting aside a set schedule of time to turk. Start small and slowly add more time/boundaries to it. When my husband started having Wednesdays off, it was a mess for me. I work at home anyway, and it took him a little while to understand that just because he had the day off, I didn't. It'll get better, just work on it slowly.

 

Distractions and obligations will definitely take a sledgehammer to the old PE. Like when I look over and see something like this

 

Sometimes you really gotta improvise to get those disagreeable boogers.

 

It's part of the plan to integrate into @Hummingbirdee androgynous posse and take it down from the inside.

 

lol just wait til you have kids. working from home with a 3 year old is becoming a nightmare

Totally agree. I think everyone should take pride in their work regardless of what you're doing. I'm also pretty competitive so that probably plays into it as well. If we're digging ditches I want my ditch to be better than yours.

However we're talking about two different things here. As an employer you can't assume that employees aren't motivated, and unmotivated, by incentive. Well you can, but you'd be wrong. And even the people like you do their job well based on their own personal values and regardless of their incentives, there's never been a time when you just said fuck it? I bet the guy making $200k has less fuck it moments than the dude making $7.25.
