Basement is empty right now...he took over RJ's room when he had the wreck.

 

That's awesome. It's totally doable in many situations, but not all. My oldest has her PhD, debt free. Parents and her working paid for undergrad, she got a fellowship for PhD.

But it is different for a lot of people. My parents didn't inform me I was on my own for college until after I graduated high school, so it was when I was STARTING college thinking they were paying for it that I realized they weren't.

I went to the cheapest schools I could after learning that. And got no grants or need based scholarships because my parents made a lot of money and that counted for several years until I had been on my own for a while. Hence, the long time it took me to get through school working my way through. Loans had to happen by year 10 of trying to finish.

Also, a majority of my loans are from my graduate school. I tripled my loan balance because of grad school, and I was making $18/hour at a part time job then. Grad school ain't cheap. Worth it, though.

(Before anyone snarks that I'm turking so how worth it could it have been? I quit my high paying job in San Francisco after my daughter died, moved to a cheaper area of California, and took lower paying jobs so I could be there more for my son. I was in no mental place to keep my high paying job after my kid died. Had that not happened, I'd be making bank right now, but currently I have no regrets about quitting and no regrets that that choice means I turk now so my son has a better life. I wish my daughter were still alive, that's the only life outcome I regret.)
