Very interesting.

Several of their conclusions about mTurk workers are based on a HIT they put out in “Short survey about Mechanical Turk” for $0.50. They put a lot of weight on the fact that 43.5% of workers said their primary motivation for completing mTurk surveys was "money" (I'm actually surprised it was that low) and that only 15.2% said they would complete future studies for no pay vs. 85.7% of volunteer non-mTurk respondents. This led them to the conclusion that "...volunteer and paid online subjects reported fundamentally different motivations for their participation in online surveys, and volunteers reported having substantially higher average levels of intrinsic motivation."

Of course they do! Who answers surveys on mTurk purely because they are intrinsically motivated? Amazon labels it right on the homepage as "a crowdsourcing marketplace." If you want to fill out surveys purely because you're motivated to help research or advance the study of a particular subject, mTurk is not one of the places you'd go.

The other conclusions about paid vs. volunteer respondents providing more accurate data are very interesting and up for more interpretation, but I disagree with their conclusions that mTurk workers' motivations are less "intrinsic" because they're motivated by money is largely due to the platform, not the workers themselves.

tl;dr: It's not like turkers come to the site wanting to help science and then get greedy and start providing bad data just for the money.

 

Survey was probably underpaid as fuck so people who are actually experienced workers avoided it.
