They do take better if you root them a bit. Also, I scar just the outside layer of the onion because the new growth will come from the inside layers. That lets it be a bit thicker. Also, don't plant the top of the cutting under the soil. It grows out super skinny.

 

I mean completely under the soil, of course the roots are under.
