Also remember that it's in a dog's nature to hide weaknesses, so if they're showing discomfort, you can be sure they're feeling it 10x worse than that. Like she said, there will never be a clear "is the dog ready?" sign, because they won't show that. There not being a clear sign like that makes it even more difficult to make the call yourself. Hell, I had my little lady on the vet table and they said she was going to die a painful, suffering death within hours... It was either [horrible details] or put her down, and I still wonder if I could have done something differently.

 

I know I'm not super active in here, but I just have to chime in. You're not horrible. Deciding when it's time is a brutally hard decision. I just had to say goodbye to my giant old dog Malachi in September. I tend to adopt older dogs, so I'm pretty good about seeing the signs of when it's time to let them go, but I just couldn't with him. He was the one dog I adopted at a young age and had him for 12 years, which is EXTREMELY old for 160-pound dog. He started really deteriorating this summer, and that last month I don't think I slept more than 2 hours per night. He, too, would wake me up constantly to go out and his hips were getting so bad I was practically killing myself to help him up and outside. He outweighed me by almost 30 pounds.

The last week with him, I slept on the floor every night. He was such a stoic dog that I know he tried to hide his pain from me, but looking back now, I know there were signs. My only regret is not taking him in sooner because I know he was trying to be strong for me. Maybe she is trying to tell you it's time in the only way she can. She can definitely pick up on your frustration, and I can tell you love her enough that you don't want her final days to be filled with any negative feelings. This is never an easy decision, so don't think of yourself as a "terrible callous human" because you are not. You will know when it's time. My heart truly hurts for you, and I'm sorry.

Thank you guys for being so kind. I think I'm still going to try and make it through the holidays and just accept the issues that will cause. She still likes to go for walks. She still wants to be cuddled and petted. She still gets excited when we get home. But yeah, this excessive neediness and her completely giving up on asking to go outside to pee might be the only way she can tell me that while she loves me and loves being with me, it's really time.

She's almost 16 years old. We've had her for 9.5 of those years and we have done our best to love her and make her feel wanted (we were her fifth family, so she experienced a lot of rejection before us.)
