I used to do this when I was a kid. It's kind of a pita, but it can be done. Make sure to look at the weight of the yarn carefully - sometimes, what looks like a good worsted weight is actually several strands of much thinner yarn in commercially knitted sweaters.

 

I have something I made myself that I never wear and was just telling someone I'm about to unravel it. I love the yarn so I want to recycle it into something I might actually wear.

It'll be all crimped and stuff, so it helps to get it wet and gently stretch it out a bit of make it easier to work after it's all unraveled, I used to wrap it around the back of a chair. Frogging is so satisfying though

 

I used to go to the print shop with my dad at like 4:30 am and help him maintain all the machines...got a cream italian ice or a black & white cookie for my troubles. PURE PROFIT, BB!
