The water where I live medium-hard and I don't know anyone with brass. I don't think homebuilders even bother with it and pretty sure I've never noticed it at Home Depot.

 

I gots hard water. Comes from a public well. No water softener. my brass faucets turn minerally after a couple months, and shower walls turn red. Doesn't bother me. The water tastes fine, just have to do a bit extra cleaning.

Mostly stainless steel around here. Lots of plastic showerheads in newer houses too. You get that white build up on stuff here from the higher calcium concentration in our water.

I had both white/yellow/ugly build up at my old house. I think the white build up was mostly from the softener. We used to but the big rock salt stuff in to make it softer.. It was still very hard water though
