I was just reading through some old posts and saw this. Did you try it out again? I'm thinking that your starter may have been "bad" OR the water was too hot (kills the yeast) OR too much salt (if there was salt involved it may have killed the yeast if you put it into the sponge you started out with. My grandmother always let her yeast begin to "fizzle" quite a bit and then carefully placed the little bit of salt she was going to use in. I don't know if that will help. There is also a possibility that the 4-hour proofing was too long and caused problems for you. So many possible causes out there LOL ... Do you "measure" or "weigh" your ingredients?
