Yesterday I was editing my kid's English essay. He kept using the gender neutral pronoun "they" to reference one entity. I crossed that out everywhere and substituted with "him, he, his". He asked me why as he carefully used the neutral pronoun everywhere. I explained since the gender of this entity is known (male), even though it's not a human it's really bad form to use "they" for two reasons: 1) English does not have a gender neutral pronoun for a single entity, and 2) forcing "they" to fit is just lazy and unnecessary.

His teacher grades them like they're in college already (I've seen some of his edits and been happily surprised at the level he's holding these sophomore AP students to), so I am holding my kid to that level, too. Even if it is a pronoun.

No clue if my kid actually changed it, but if he didn't...there goes his A on this essay!

 

If it's not human (like a cat or a dog), isn't it okay to use "it"?
