I actually don't know, I'm not a childhood expert, but empathy is hard for little ones in general because they're selfish little shits, and schoolyard teasing is basically normalized kid stuff.

Actually...now I'm going to sound like a pretentious douche...pre-apologies!

Kids as young as 2 know empathy. it's natural for them to start exhibiting it when they realize others can feel differently from how they feel.

However.

Due to modeling many learn to stop showing empathy.

Modeling from parents. From peers. From fear.

Many kids don't yet have the guts to stand alone and be empathetic without the support of their peers and the fear of of being ostracized is a large behavioral modifier.

Some kids, like mine, hate other kids due to this. He is very empathetic and can't stand kids who aren't, and he just goes off by himself and tells the rest of them to eff the eff off. He doesn't care if he's isolated from peers, so much so that no one even teases him.

That and he's 6' tall and it seems like the taller a guy is at a younger age the less he gets teased (sometimes, this does not always hold true, that's for sure!)
