Happy Leap Day forum! How's Saturday treating everyone?

 

Padded out my weekly goal a bit even though I was already above it if I count bonuses + I passed monthly a few days ago, so pretty good. Time to take the rest of the month off.

One of the worst parts is the smell really. If your coop isn't mobile the chicken poop will just sit there. You have to change the straw often to keep it from settling into the ground. If you don't have close neighbors near the coop you can get away with it. Feed varies on price and quality. Layer pellet bags start around $12 and the crumbles begin at about $15. That's for the standard feed. The organic and medicated feeds can cost as much as $30. Waterers and feeders are cheap and you can sometimes build your own. If your coop doesn't have a roosting box you'll want to build or get one. You don't need an individual cubby for each hen to lay in because they will most likely only use one or two. They are prone to illness and going broody which means they'll stop laying. More than illness though they are very prone to being attacked by other animals. You'll want to make sure the coop is secured. They can take a few months to lay while they get settled in or depending on how old they are. When they do start laying it's an egg a day most of the time.
