I mean, this is actually true. Until you sell, it's all just paper losses. Had 10,000 shares of a spider fund in February, you still have 10,000 shares (probably more, actually, with continual investments and dividends).

The other really important thing to keep in mind, for investments, is whether you're near to retirement or have 10, 15, 20 years to go.
