Years ago, when I was a wee little toxic Turker who would rip into anyone who even thought about posting a batch or who couldn't break $5/hr, a requester was posting HITs on MTurk that paid pretty decently for the time & were usually kinda simple/not a big deal. One of their particular batches randomly showed up, but you had to have a password to work on them. Idk how it was at first but I do remember it was a big shitstorm on the forums because no one fucking had the password.

Someone, as a total joke, told everyone I had the password to this dude's HITs (I did not). It was a joke, I'm a pretty chill dude, I took it about as well as you'd expect but I was inundated with messages from every lurker under the fucking sun asking for it. And half of them had their particular w/e story they felt like sharing.

Well it turns out the HITs weren't actual work. They were research to map / understand how Turkers connect with each other over social media. So while I was having my work day sucked away from me that fuckface researcher was sitting there reading everything everyone was saying and then he'd later use that to go make a big boy name for himself at fancy conferences and sell a fucking book that he got to tour across the country for.

I have joked about it for years, but it is legitimately one of those things that made me chill the fuck out on hating "other workers" b/c half those folks who DM'd me sent me shit like "yo I'm turking to pay my electricity I need this" or random dudes in India like "omg it doesn't have US qual I could make my monthly income in a day" p much all the sob stories you'd expect. Who knows how many were/weren't true, the point is that piece of shit dumped ALL of that on me so he could go tour around the country plastering his bullshit "awww think of the poor downtrodden workers" and of course to really top off the irony he has underpaid workers plenty of times when he posts research to the platform.

He also happens to work for a tech company with a very large research division. On their home page their openly brag about how they don't give a shit about ethics, the only thing they "respect" is "innovation" - they have, repeatedly, sent researchers here who have 1) lied about who they were 2) lied about what they were doing 3) pretended to be "workers" to fish for information and 4) brazenly refused to identify themselves when asked what the eff they were doing here.

The entire city he lives in should just be razed to the ground in my book. Nothing of value would be lost.

All the old timers know how I feel about it, but that's the TL;DR of a 4-year burning passion of hatred for that ash hole stealing way too much of my time for his shitty research I never asked or consented to be a part of. And thank fuck I was the guy who ate all those stories, given the way some people react to "triggers" he'd have sent some folks who work on this platform into depression for his own bullshit.

 

All I can say about that is what a pile of shit human being.
