Building basements is expensive. Finishing them also costs money.

Well there are storm shelters.. but it's a small hole. Not a full underground level.

Depends on what area. When we lived in/near Lubbock, quite a few houses had basements. Where we are now, closer to San Antonio, very few places have basements.

I think one reason might be bc the ground is too hard in many places. Also right where we are, it's hilly and we really don't have much danger of tornadoes. Flash flooding is the thing here.

Yep! It was big! Apparently the movie Semi-Tough was based on it too, but I haven't seen that one.
That was in 1977. Huh! Still another fourteen years before the appearance of the incredibly young @Kerfuffle ,
who at this point isn't going to get off 'easy' tonight, although I'm sure I'll be back to being nice to her tomorrow!

Well... thanks @Bob W because now my new favorite phrase is son of a biscuit eater. Prediction: Husband will be VERY annoyed within a week.

Oh man - yeah Tony Robbins was the worst! I worked at a used book store in Michigan in the 90's and people were still coming in and buying up all his books and craziness.

Freyja! Yeah that was totally how it was. I watched the Americans (which I loved) and that was pretty realistic. My mom went a different cult route but she could have easily gone EST.

It can be wildly different in the different areas of the state. There are also 5 separate climate zones in Texas :)

My brother was near Dallas for years and they didn't have a basement because it was all clay in their neighborhood. Lots of really damaging hail storms, some tornadoes and lots of flooding. Are you guys having tornadoes right now? Stay safe!
