I've never called a woman "ma'am", except in specialized circumstances where a kind of 'respectful conformity' is expected.
Like if she's a law-enforcement officer, or judge, or similar. It's always "Miss". I don't get 'called' on it very often, but when I do get a "What
makes you think I'm a Miss?" response, I say "But....you're too young to be a Ma'am!" I get a smile every time!

I get called ma'am a lot. It makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason.

 

The last time I was called ma'am was from a 5-6ish year old telling me she liked my hair. Now I'm worried I gave her accidental sass prior to her compliment and she knew exactly what she was doing. I try so hard to be polite but what if I've been rude without realizing it?! Why would you do this to meeee.

At least I still get carded for beer. So apparently I'm simultaneously <21 and >50.

I was raised to "ma'am" as sign of respect and this has been a ridiculously difficult habit to break (and I've been actively trying to because I know it isn't appreciated especially in certain locales). After several recent years in the northeast, though, I think I'm down to just one or two slip-ups a year. We'll see if that sticks now that I'm back in the midwest.

And yes, I'm old enough now that I really shouldn't ever do this.
