hah yeah its a hard game to get into and play at times

 

The only way I would survive this game is by hiding behind someone else who knows what they are doing. Like, the whole time.

 

It'd be ordered by the surgeon, but I moved states. I haven't got a doctor here, yet. I'm waiting on approval for a "Yup. Damn. You're poor." medical system group. I applied, then....nothing. Called after 8 weeks and was told the specific clinic I'd applied to wasn't taking any new patients, but my general application was in the system for the whole network and I fit the criteria. 2 minutes after I got my application finished for the whole damn network.

I know exactly what needs done, and if I could see an ocular surgeon for like 10 minutes, I could go in with a list of from the last time and the layer-by-layer scans I had from the last time the tumor was removed and go "Schedule the CT in 30 minutes, I'll be back in 2 hours. Here's what I looked like before, and at my last surgery, so try to keep the same scar lines on my eyelid. Try to not screw up like the last one and scrape to the bone and nick a nerve and cause this crap to regrow."

 

I totally understand. I had to have my thyroid removed and had moved so was terrified, had to fight with insurance, and advocate for myself on phone call after phone call to get the care that I needed for the surgery that had to happen. I was at a risk to bleed out, had to order my own vitamin K injection for clotting - have it sent to the hospital, etc etc etc. And we had no money.

The health care system is overwhelming and doesn't always work very well. It sounds like you know what you need to have happen.

I hope that you keep calling daily and be the squeaky wheel. If the next step is (a simple CT Scan) for things to move forward, I would just dedicate 30 mins every day to calling to get what you need done.

If you have your previous scans call every doctor and primary care provider in the area (if you have to) and bring everything with you.

And keep calling insurance providers and send in all the stuff for the hospitals for free care.

I'm sorry you had such a crap experience and had a nerve nicked. That sucks. Don't give up though.

Thing is, if I'd stayed in KS, it probably would've been done already.

I was homeless there. My best friend's wife is a pediatrician at a very large hospital in Kansas City and could have pulled strings. Like, a fuck-ton. My previous surgeon, even though I was making $19/hr and had a bunch of disposable income, looked at my CT scan and said "You're my new favorite person. I get to write a paper on this."

I paid $300 for the initial consultation, got 1 bill post-op, and it disappeared. When I called to make payment arrangements the clerk told me that the $13k bill had been dropped to $4k and been written off.

So I think my surgeon was telling the truth, and got the whole thing written off as research, because I'd checked all the "Yes, you can keep whatever you cut out" boxes. A hospital where I was living just got bought by the same healthcare system as the first, so I probably could've had him again, and again gotten it written off as a study like the first one.

I'd had Feb 1 as my cut-off date to stop saving money to take off work and get to the Dr, but my brother was driving through vs his usual flying in Dec. and I had about 18 hours to make the choice to move.

Then COVID hit, and everything went *sproink*.

Well *sproink* is probably the best definition of what happened, particularly if you are in the health care system.

Any chance that with all the "re-opening" around the country you can get in touch with your surgeon? It sounds like he was pretty invested in your case and I would think might be invested in the follow-up?

Or can you temporarily go back to KC to get the CT scan?
