10/21 - Werewolf Wednesday

My mom was like this but her negativity never made me feel bad, drained, angry, etc. She was irritating because of it but it never really got under my skin. She passed away about 10 years ago, but I feel like we had a good relationship and I miss her.

My sister, however, doesn't have the mental illness issues, but she is the typical frenemy and every time I was around her, I felt awful. It went on for years before I realized that she was truly toxic in my life, and I now have nothing to do with her. It makes me said but I don't regret it at all.

I guess my takeaway from above is that it doesn't matter about someone's "reasons" for being whatever, what matters is if the relationships themselves are difficult or if they are a complete drain, make me feel awful with even quick, simple interactions, and if it's truly who they are as a person and not just a "phase" or something. It's been a couple of years since my sister and I have talked and I definitely notice the positive difference on how I feel in general and how my life is without her dragging me down.

I feel ya; it's a really hard place to be. Family relationships can get really tangled and complicated.

Wow. Glad she took the initiative to get help and it worked! I hope you guys' relationship got better as a result. Mine isn't one that will ever "stoop" to getting mental help. She won't accept that she even has a problem so it's pretty much a duck and dodge game when dealing with her.

I'm sorry and can't even begin to imagine how you feel. I think the greatest gift they've given us is the ability to have more compassion for others and to really have some insight into how our own behaviors affect our children or will affect potential children.

Definitely hard. I don't know if I could cut ties with my mom as you did with your sister. We're like best buds sometimes but it just seems like she's gotten progressively worse as she's gotten older. Or maybe I'm just more mature and realize so much of her behavior isn't normal? I don't know. I think if it makes you feel better and you have no regrets then that's the best option unfortunately. It's always nice to have someone you can be close to and depend on that you generally find in a close relative, but we don't always get that lucky.
