    Many years ago, a few months before my wedding, my fiancee (Pennsylvania born and raised) visited me in New Zealand for New Year's. As part of the preparation, she gave me a shopping list for a special dinner she wanted to make. Pork, various sides, and sauerkraut.

    I had no idea what sauerkraut was. I'd never heard of it. She was adamant - this is a "good luck" tradition and it was the New Year's dinner before we were due to get married. We had to have it.

    I was living in the biggest city in NZ at the time. This should not have been a problem, right? Au contraire.

    I spent days scouring supermarkets to no avail. I was beginning to get desperate, when I finally found a small jar in a gourmet food shop tucked away in a little corner of the city. Hurrah, I thought!

    The day comes, and my brother and his wife have joined us for this wonderful dinner. The food is passed around. Including the sauerkraut. My sister-in-law, who grew up in England, sees the sauerkraut and is ecstatic. She loves the stuff, as it turns out.

    The sauerkraut gets to my fiancee, and she takes maybe five strands of it. Not even enough to fill a teaspoon. She mixes it in with her mashed potatoes. Turns out she hates it - can't stand the stuff.

    But she was quite grateful that I'd found it, nonetheless, and that's what mattered.

    Because, there's no separation between the two halves of bun. And before you go WELL WHAT ABOUT A SUB, that's a stylistic choice and you very much can eat a sub with a separate top and bottom bread half.

    Only communists and psychos would slice a hot dog bun down the middle and put a dog between it.

    AND FURTHERMORE Hot dogs aren't a sandwich ingredient. You don't see like a turkey and hot dog sub, hot dogs are a category unto themselves.

    Therefore, not a sandwich.
