it depends on the area and such. i had a car i owned many years ago throw a rod while driving in extreme negative temps and wind chill. i pulled over on the shoulder and i knew there was no way i was getting a tow truck anytime soon, but luckily i was not far from my house. i got a ride back, left a note saying id be back to get it in a few days but sadly too late. i got a city ticket for like $20 , the tow company charged me like $30 "hook up" fee and then $5 a mile to the tow yard and $25 a day til i came and picked it up.

 

That is true. Beef jerky isn't the worst snack in the world, as long as you follow all that salt up with plenty of water. Eating anything is tough when you are going through radiation treatment, so it's good you're craving something.

 

I have insurance through my dad, whose plan I'm on, and they'll bill the excess towing over the year (I think it's AAFES?) First 10 miles is free.

But that's assuming you have insurance that has Roadside Recovery. Or even insurance at all. Then they'll just drag your car to the side or take it to impound.

That's why when I was working at a pizza place across from campus and just *felt* the rod go through the rocker, I limped it back to the parking lot. I knew it wasn't going anywhere for a while, knew my dad had a spare engine, and figured "What can I possibly mess up in 4 blocks? And, I have a parking pass."

They let it sit on campus the whole semester until Security noticed someone trying to get into it to steal my car topper, by which point I'd built the 305 and was ready to do the engine swap anyway.

Limp it to somewhere safe, because you can always buy a shortblock later. It's what I'm considering with my truck, because the area around here is so hilly, a 2.2 doesn't like highway speeds at 55mph and a 50 degree incline in 5th gear. Good gas mileage for somewhere like Kansas, but when you're missing half your left leg muscle constantly shifting on a seemingly straight section of highway sucks.

 

I think these guys are having an early holiday dinner. Simple and elegant.
