This is a great idea.

But, I have an hp, bought an ssd to install into the ssd slot, but hp is configured in some funky way that it won't allow my pc to boot from the ssd, hence making it only a storage drive. had no idea, literally doesn't make sense, but that's what it is. smh

if you're planning on upgrading elements (ssd, storage, ram, etc.) don't just check the official specs, do a bit of googling to see if there are major issues with upgrades.

Booting from a usb works.

In the bios, it won't show the ssd as an option to boot from. It's really bizarre. This is so basic. And super frustrating.

At some point, I might go hardcore and try to find a workaround, but it's out of my comfort zone. I dunno...

Not gonna lie I was morbidly curious (spent half of my day yesterday saving a corrupt windows install lol), looks like HP does lock on some models. Might be able to override by disabling "secure boot" in BIOS but it also looks like mucking w/ BIOS just bricks some models.. hard to tell how much is HP being a shit company & how much that is user error though

Safe way to test is to just pull the cord on the HDD and see if it safely boots into ssd.. assuming you can unplug the hdd no clue what kind of PC you're using here lmao.

...really safe way to test is to just pretend you didn't even read this and submit to your HP HDD overlords

 

That's right - I forgot to try this and see if it works; I can easily take out the HDD and see what happens.
