I was eating at Morton's in Chicago many years ago, and they do that whole thing with the platter of raw meat, because that apparently is supposed to justify spending a mortgage payment on a dinner for four. The waiter went through his speech, and then set the platter down off to the side of the dining room while we were making up our minds.

A couple of minutes later, I noticed the woman sitting across from me was staring over my shoulder, transfixed. I looked over and saw what she was watching - the lobster had started to slowly crawl across the platter in a desperate bid for freedom.

Silly me, I reassured her that there was no way the lobster would be dumb enough to crawl over the edge, but the lobster clearly didn't hear me and, well, he went splat onto the floor.

My friend quietly shrieked, the waiter hurried over, she pointed at the lobster, and he walked across to the platter, picked up the lobster, and gently turned it around a few times until the poor bugger started waving his little legs feebly in the air. The waiter turned and called over to my friend, "it's okay, miss, he's not dead".

I don't think anyone around that table will ever eat lobster again.
