Also, how much do workers like yourself typically make per hour via MTurk? We try to compensate research participants fairly (instead of as little as possible), so what would you say is a typical earnings/hour that we can base our compensation on? That really depends on the pacing speed of the worker/type of laptop.. it varies from one person to another..

## Rejections for Completion Speed

Requesters shouldn't reject solely for issues with completion speed, including workers who go "too fast." As a requester it's important to determine the quality of the work, not the time it took to complete it, when determining whether to approve or deny payment for a task.

##### MTurk's Velocity Filter

MTurk's velocity filter on the requester dashboard tracks the amount of time a worker had the HIT in their queue - **not** how long they actually worked on the task. This means workers who didn't start a HIT immediately skew the median times high and can cause issues when determining average completion times.

Further, some workers choose not to accept a HIT until they've previewed, begun, or even completed the task outright. In those cases even "impossible" completion speeds aren't actually telling of the quality of work.

##### Qualtrics, Javascript, etc

Some requesters utilize Qualtrics or javascript snippets to attempt to track worker's completion times. While this can provide more nuanced data than MTurk's default filters they still should not be used by themselves in rejection determinations. A number of niche workflow scenarios, as well as browser/computer settings can make the data returned by these features unreliable.

##### Comparisons across populations

Many workers on MTurk take part in a variety of studies & HITs. Many common conditions repeat themselves making the tasks faster for experienced workers. Workers also build special tools & use keyboard shortcuts to help them complete work faster than someone seeing a task for the first time could replicate.

You can use TurkerView to get a general idea of how fast your task is being completed by actual workers, but we still highly recommend never using completion speeds as a rejection/approval criteria.
