Is there a script floating around for these Fashion RnRs?

 

I guess since were on the topic and I'm not really knowledgeable Ill ask a few questions.

I have one website in particular that I pull DIY posts from where some threads are a few years old. All the pictures the user had included with their instructions no longer are viewable. Is that because they were hosted on the site and got deleted, were they just linked from places and those places purged the photos or what causes that?

Does anyone have any resources or advice for a beginner to learn about the scripting/code writing that I see being done around here?
Once I learn that stuff, will I have a better understanding of some of the back end stuff and how it all interacts?

Side note: I also tried Linux a number of years ago. It was a ubuntu (I dont really remember anything further) but I felt like I was working in a command prompt and I had no idea what I was doing. Is it worth giving it another shot and playing around more? Anyone have any resources or advice for a beginner to learn more about all of this?

 

None of the other mTurk forums use SSL, so they don't have that "problem" and thus you don't see the proxying happening there because they have it disabled. The gotcha there is that when you log into those sites anyone can see your data (are you on wifi? mobile? in a public place? You're sending your password for the world to see).

Is this a big deal for an mTurk forum? Lol hell no, probably not. I added SSL to this site as much to learn the process as anything else. IMO using SSL is 'best practice' - it offers everyone here security even if the data being secured isn't actually important. But as the admin that's my job. Maybe its not "worth" it given the user issues that arise from it and images but those exist as a byproduct of my lack of understanding and effort in troubleshooting the issue - not as a problem with the tool itself.

As I said above, I have to rehost (or proxy) unsecured content otherwise the site will lose its "security rating" with people like Google (when their bots crawl the site and see unsecure content they freak out and call me a bad boy).

 

Wow, that makes complete sense now. Never gave that a thought before.
