My Mom got my wife one for Christmas. Best I can guess it was punishment for me breaking curfew or something a decade ago because that thing is truly awful.

IMO using Illustrator obliterates DS even though you do basically have to add a bunch of steps to get it back in there to cut or w/e but the # of tech support issues I've had to solve have gone down since swapping my wife over to Illustrator lol. For everything else I tell her to just buy the stupid monthly subscription to their shop or w/e since it's cheaper than my sanity

I think something like 15,327 days there should be affordable time travel so that many.

@ChrisTurk I am starting to think they purposely are creating issues within the app just so you get so irritated that you give up and pay for their subscription which I don't want to do. I really don't want to pay for fonts and images that I can very easily download legally from the net for free.

 

@ChrisTurk what are your thoughts on canva? I have a bit of experience using the free version of this. I just look and the pro is $10 a month compare to illustrator which is much more. Wonder if it would be worth my sanity to subscribe to the pro so that I can upload my own fonts...

YMMV taking my advice so fair warning lol buuuuut my thing is this: Illustrator is old, well understood, and more importantly well documented for basically anything in the fathomable world my wife would want to do and - most importantly - she can find that documentation herself without my intervention. Even better, it isn't just useful for Cricut (I probably do think it's a waste if that's the sole use case you have for it fwiw, but also if you're doing Etsy for profit maybe less of a waste since having professional tools by default puts you ahead of the majority of randos fighting Crictu's garbage trying to do the same thing).

Anyway Illustrator saves me time. I don't particularly care what my wife does or uses w/r/t Cricut and neither does she because she just wants something that works so she can use her fun toy.

So the extra $10 or w/e is more for the 20 years worth of google-able tutorials than the software itself.

Canva specifically.. I think I used it once to make an infographic and it was nothing even remotely in the ballpark range of Illustrator.. in fact it was worse than DS since it was in the browser lol. I could be mistaken but Canva legit just looks like Cricut's subscription.. you get a boatload of content and janky UI to try and edit it into what you actually want (which still won't happen and you'll always be fighting the original artist IME)

Obvious this is a random slice, but because the usage rate is so high I know it's 500x as likely if my wife runs into an issue there is an easily found solution out there for the problem already documented on some forum/reddit/youtube for the Illustrator => Cricut pathing. Sort of doubt that exists for Canva, and if it does I definitely expect it to be a lot more janky given what Canva is lol.

I am also partial to this sort of decision tree so take it with a grain of salt. I use it when I program something as well. Could I learn something new, cutting edge, and super awesome? Yeah sure but I'm a verified dumbass so I'd rather use something that has 10 years of other dumbasses who came before me having their problems fixed at the tip of my google-fingers

Similarly I like/prefer monthly subscription models as a consumer so I rarely have problems paying for something I use regularly as long as the pricing ends up looking like a value steal in my usage tracker lol.

@ChrisTurk Thank you so much for the input. I think I have some research to do. I might call cricut this morning just for sh*ts and giggles to see what they have to say about my issue. I googled alternatives to DS and "sure cuts a lot" came up as a highly rated program as well. I really need to look into these alternatives and decide which one is going to work the best for what I want to do. But, I definitely need something that is going to reliable and work all the time and not just when it wants to work properly.
