    What's a good brand/label that won't break the bank?

What's "breaking the bank" for you (genuine, not me being sassy)? You can get a lot of decent scotch for ~$50, but I also have some cheaper whiskey faves if you're looking cheaper.

Yeah I think ~$50 would be my upper limit. I've only ever had Evan Williams and Jack tbh.

You're probably asking the wrong guy cus I'm too broke to drink "high quality" whisky, although I have had some.

I'm stuck drinking the cheap stuff, of which I like Old Crow and my go to currently is "Caliber Premium Canadian" - comes in a big plastic bottle and costs 11 bucks. Sounds like it would be terrible but despite the name, its manufactured in a distillery in Kentucky - so technically it qualifies as bourbon (which just means its whisky made in Kentucky basically...)

I've also thought about trying my hand at some Rum. Had a buddy way back that must've replaced his blood with Kraken. Thankfully he's much better off now.

But if I was going to recommend a higher caliber of whiskey, I'd recommend Copper Run - a small batch producer in the Ozarks. I feel like larger brand names generally are overpriced and basically the same level of quality as cheaper options

Man you know what, if I ever get rich and really feel like flexing I guess I'll buy some expensive alcohol, but when I was really struggling I drank a $3 pint of Mr. Boston every day and if you gave me that and Ciroc in a shot glass side by side I probably wouldn't even be able to know the difference. Or care because I don't drink for taste :emoji_grimacing:

I'm of the opinion that most of the differences are entirely in people's heads and the results of marketing. But people don't like to hear that when you talk about stuff like alcohol

One tip on whisky - if you just add a small bit of water it makes rough whiskeys taste very smooth

I tend to like Speyside scotch, which isn't particularly smoky but has a yummy salty/briney/seaside flavor, so YMMV. Also tossing in some Irish whiskeys because yum.

    Cheap:
    2 Gingers ~$20
    Tullymore Dew ~$20

Nicer, but still (comparatively to the genre) cheap distilleries:
    Glenfarclas 10 year ~$40
    Aberlour ~$50
    Balvenie ~$60

So...you can choose between blended and single malt.

Blend = more consistent experience from year to year.
Single malt = more variety, purer experience of the regional characteristics.

(I'm a single malt snob, but I recognize whisky makers work very hard to ensure a blend has exactly the taste profile they want year to year.)

In single malt worlds, you can't go wrong with Glenmorangie, which should be under $50. Glen Moray, Glenlivet, Ardbeg, HIghland Park, and my favorite, Laphroaig. That last one is an acquired taste, however, being very peaty/smoky (it's a characteristic of any Scotch whisky from the Islay region).

Blends? Chivas Regal is pretty decent, and Dewars is fine. I don't really like Johnny Walker - I think it's overrated and overpriced at every level from Red Label up. But it's famous for a reason.
