Weak, It's Only Wednesday!

I've had a similar experience. At first I thought it was a summer slowdown type of thing, but the work fell off by more than 90% from my first few weeks on there and it's been just as long without it coming back now. Usually I see 0 studies all day or 1 study that pays peanuts sitting there all day.

 

Prolific has been terrible lately. I used to sign on in the morning and catch a good 5 to 7 bucks worth. Now, there is nothing.

 

It'll either be long, dry, and very tedious, or it'll be an expletive-laden rant full of bitterness and we watch his head slowly explode in real time.

Give it a try, maybe we'll get lucky and get the second one. That'd be good for a laugh.

MTurk: free for all conveyor belt system. HITs are tossed onto the production line and everyone standing at the front of the conveyer belt gets them. MTurk gives functionality to requesters that can filter workers but exerts no actual control on that scoping and leaves it completely up to the requester to engage with their workforce as desired. A valid marketplace design.

Prolific: Takes MTurk and finagles itself into the conveyer belt, booting experienced factory line workers to the back of the pack on purpose to hit company priority needs (which they presume are also their customer needs). Exerts control on the when you can work. Non valid marketplace design. All the cons, none of the plusses (an actual paycheck) of a system where a third party company exerts control over your work.

TurkPrime: Sits in the middle. Acts more as an added filter, giving requesters the ability to implement Prolific's "silent" functionality, but is boogeyman by nature of being purely third party. The key factor, for me, is they do not silently insert their filters without the actual "hiring" body making the choice.

It's not a cap. If they cannot fill market quota, they will let you in. But they prefer not to and so they exert their own control over the flow of tasks. Someone could argue (and prolific does) it's about "data quality" but that's bullshit. If MTurk applied the Masters qualification to tasks without the requester's approval I'd say MTurk was equally as bullshit, but they don't do that because they aren't stupid.


All that said, it's dead of Summer and Prolific is almost a purely academic platform, the entire ecosystem will be zzz until mid-Sept IIRC and that matters 10x more than their stupid philosophy on how you're not actually a person since it sits in front of that algorithm.
