And in any case the developers will just make it wrong in a few days, anyway, because they'll change something without being asked, and it'll be some geeky "refactoring" nonsense which is probably really useful and cool, but the customer doesn't care and the business is now annoyed because it broke something unrelated and they still don't have the feature they've been shouting about for six months and IT sucks.

And who gets the blame? That's right, the product owner.
