Why would you borrow money to buy stocks? Don't you buy stocks with money you have? Wouldn't everyone just go all-in on like Tesla stock with money they didn't have if this was the case?

    Welcome to the stock market.

But seriously, it can be dangerous business. It's all well and good while Tesla's going up and you're making money with little investment, but then Elon Musk makes some weird tweet and causes his stock to drop by 20%, giving you a heart attack. Still, some people prefer to live that way.

Short answer: to make more money.

You would still need to have collateral in your portfolio, so yeah you need to fund your account with your own money (unless of course you borrowed that from another source). Most brokerages put a cap on the amount they will let you borrow though. You could go HAM on Tesla and maybe make some money. however, the opposite is just as likely to happen and you could lose money. It's all a gamble.

There's alot of ways to gamble in the ole stonk market. And some people do use margin (borrowing against their portfolio). The reason people don't just YOLO all-in on certain stocks with margin (I mean.. they do...) is that you have to have a portfolio with some worth already and be approved to buy on margin through whatever brokerage you use. I personally find it silly to play with money you don't have, but high risk.. high reward (sometimes).

Margin is a fairly simple and common "market" practice. Now, if you really want to get convoluted and into some real scumbaggery... lets get you up to speed on OPTIONS!

It allows you increase your leverage and make money faster. If you use in combination with options or indices, your buying power can control a disproportionate amount of stocks, eg $7k controlling $14 million of SPX. Typically brokers will limit margin based on buying power/value & volatility of other items in your account.

I've decided that I'm not enough of a risk taker for the stock market. I'll stick to my CoDs and let my job manage my IRAs.

Without getting overly technical or writing a book... the simplest way I can think to explain options is as follows:

    You own a home
I come and say "Hey, I want to give you $10000 right now for the option to buy your home later for XXX dollars"
    You accept.
I am betting the value of your home will be > XXX by the time we agreed upon.
When the agreed upon time comes, I can exercise my option and pay you XXX for your home.

Some brokers match your accounts though, with few limitations; @AlexZ could put a million dollars into Robinhood to solidify his ownership of BHAT International and they'd give him a million more to borrow on margin just for being a customer.

This has led to calls for stricter regulation, but nothing has been passed yet. It's been great for companies to make a killing off retail investors who make uninformed bets with margin.
Typically they only require an experience form though, e.g. "How many years have you done trading/what is your experience with margin" and many people lie, e.g. WSB on Reddit.

I quit buying CDs ages ago. The return rates got really s****y. I haven't checked in awhile, but you may want to look into municipal offerings. Alot of the times these will be >= bank offered CDs. I do my own IRA investing and am happy with the results ;)

Yeah the interest rates are shitty, but better than letting $20k sit in a savings account. When my aunt died, my son was 6-months-old so what was he gonna do with the $10k she left him? (They never had kids.) I talked to the bank and was like look what am I gonna do with this money and so we put it in the longest term CD they offered to get the most interest.
