Let's be realistic; most of the investors will be harvesting taxes losses up to the limit for the next 10 years after buying at the top :emoji_joy:

I did try to get into Crypto when this was all going on. DOGE was huge so the second it got added to Coinbase I threw $100 at it. It then tanked. So then when SHIB got added to Coinbase I transferred it over and made back my loss and I said NO MORE and cashed out.

You may want to consider a Vanguard fund. As long as you don't mind holding onto it for 10 years, you'll earn around 8% or so per year for one of their total market funds. It's about as safe as the stock market gets.

When it runs the course, I'd either move it into a municipal if you want it liquid anytime soon or open a Custodial IRA for your son and start his retirement account off for him. Usually they transfer when the child reaches 18. ;)

I forgot the limits on Custodial IRAs and whether you can specify Traditional or Roth (outside my immediate area of remembrance)... I've always preferred Roth to avoid having Uncle Sam come tickle my backside with his tax collecting feather.

I do want to stay away from the IRA option because if my son doesn't go to the university where I work, I know that's gonna be a huge bill. I'd like him to not have to go into crazy student loan debt. I also personally used all of the CDs I had when I moved out to be the down payment on my house. That was nice to be able to do. I get that retirement's something to worry about, but if he can have a good start to his adult life, he should be able to manage that much on his own. If he doesn't have that good start, he'll never get to the point where he could retire.

If you plan on really keeping it in, using it for long term savings, Fidelity has a triple-advantaged HSA, and Roths

Deductions for contribution, gains and withdrawal at maturity are tax-free for the HSA, and you can get SPY, QQQ, and other very steady indice-tracking funds with cheaper fees and more selection than VOO (Vanguard's product that tracks the same index), fee-wise.

There are qualified withdrawals (terminology might be off here), for IRA accounts. Purchasing your first home does qualify for a tax free withdrawal from an IRA. I know for a Roth and I think it also applies to Traditional, but I'd have to check. Depending on his age and the estimated time til he's gonna be dropping bank on a home.. the IRA route may be the best "Set it and forget it" path to accumulating >2% return from a CD.

You could also consider a 529 College Plan which has tax advantages :emoji_wink:

No worries. I wish someone had taken me aside and "hipped" me to the game earlier. I had to do alot of reading and paying out to learn.

Key take aways from my ramblings:

    Look into Custodial IRAs
Understand the difference between Traditional and Roth IRA
    Understand contribution limits with each
Look into qualified withdrawals from said accounts
"quick maff" the ROI between traditional bank CD, municipal funds (I forget their designation off the top of my tired brain), and the IRA route.
Utilize one or a combination of these and JR will be suckling the teet of success before he can even apply the quadratic formula

<3 Fidelity has great "contribute and forget" 529 and IRA funds. Vanguard has similar options, but no HSA, and higher fees.

If you plan on doing anything active, TD Ameritrade has amazing ThinkorSwim Analytics, grand OTC /options, and has everything but an HSA.

TDA is also being merged into Charles Schwab, and they have fantastic customer support. (Schwab was #1 on several metrics over the past 10 years, has award-winning debit/checking services too)
