I am a big proponent for Vanguard's offerings, but I will say I am supremely happy with Schwab for banking. If you travel.. you absolutely can NOT beat their ATM incentive. The only -real- downside is their banking is strictly online and they have no actual brick and mortar's left. Not as much of an issue nowadays and for those who don't regularly need to drop tons of cash in (cash is usually deposited via purchase of a money order and check deposit app).

On a related side note while I'm rambling.. I will say that Schwab (like most modern banks and especially those which are online centric), they do have a thing they do which they dub "Sweeping" where they essentially make money off your idle money (and if memory serves you do get a little trickle down) but at least they're open about it lol. Banking is an interesting and amusing system in and of itself once you start peeling the onion. Careful if you do look into how banking actually works.. you might get ill. Too much onion will upset most tummies ;)

Only problem with that is if he does go to the university where I work, his tuition would be free and thus there'd be penalties then? If I understand right? My mom took out Coverdales for me (those are 529s right) and we had to transfer them to my nieces and nephews since I got enough scholarships that I didn't need to use all of the money.

Income tax + 10% penalty if you just take it out for something not school related. But you can use it for all college expenses including books and supplies or just education like kindergarten or high school related stuffs.

    Rules for withdrawal :emoji_wink:

Vanguard has almost the worst of any "real" brokerage, ratewise, extremely limited fund options, restrictions on selling options on stocks you own, non-negotiable fees, no indices, futures etc. They are the 401k provider of choice for many large companies, with people who don't notice the fee structure, and don't pay as much attention to it. With just a few tweaks, you could find an identical product with less than half of their fund fees.

If you like their funds, you might shop around and compare, save yourself some money!

For the S&P 500 tracking funds, their VOO fund is over double the fees of Fidelity's similar fund (0.03 to 0.0115)
ishares beats them in non-NA/emerging markets etc.

@Lumius Might be able to chime in on this one, but I do believe that with a Roth.. since it is made with after tax dollars.. you -can- withdraw your initial investment (that is the principal money invested.. not the interest accurred) at anytime tax free. The biggest drawback to Roths is the limited amount you can contribute yearly.

I've long since moved most of my stuff over to Schwab and some of their funds, but my primarily portfolio is self directed and I don't keep alot of my portfolio in mutual funds or ETFs. I do cover the basics with a 3 fund setup, but it is more as a buffer against large swings in the market.

It's true. Roth's can work as a sort of savings account that way, at least if you REALLY need the money and don't mind sacrificing your investments.

They're not as good when you retire as a plain ol' IRA, from what I understand, basically because the standard deduction and the lower tax bracket while retired make up for the taxes you would pay on the withdrawals compared to a Roth.

Vice versa, actually. If you don't withdraw before 59 1/2 and you've had the account 5 years, you don't pay on the gains for Roth IRAs. IRA traditional=before tax, IRA Roth=aftertax, no penalty on gains.

"Under current tax law, you can withdraw Roth contributions and their accumulated earnings tax-free as long as you're at least age 59½ and it has been at least five years since you first contributed to a Roth IRA."

I had read a whole article where someone broke down the numbers between the two, and it showed the IRA coming out ahead in the end. It had to do with the money saved on taxes to use for investments earlier on. But I don't have the website at hand and this isn't a great place to discuss the nitty gritty of it all.

@JensenIsHere Yes, I've seen that! There is the argument that inflation will make paying the taxes with future, inflated dollars, is better. I personally prefer Roth, since it's done, taxwise, and I don't have to speculate about imagined inflation outpacing my growth.

There's also a large calling for Roth to have limits, or be changed, since rich people are getting stock cheap, putting in a Roth, letting it grow tax free.

Several people associated with Berkshire Hathaway have done this too.
