There is honestly no good answer. The idea is that academic researchers will be launching first semester projects soonish, and that will bring an influx of studies, surveys and sometimes other projects. Thing is, Mturk is not designed for academic research - Prolific and Cloud Research are, so a lot of people are choosing to run their projects on one of them instead. My understanding is that there has been a rash of Indian Mturk accounts providing garbage data to requesters lately.

I would argue that the good money on Mturk is not academic anyway, it's in machine learning, natural language processing and artificial intelligence batch work. That's what Mturk was made for in the first place, and that's what it's good at.
