Also like I get we're all penny pinching where we can but this is why I splurge $250 each year on a CPA. I know there aren't mistakes and that she'll claim as much as she can. She always runs multiple calculations depending on what we're able to do for IRA contributions too. I'm a numbers person, but that doesn't mean I have all of tax law memorized.

 

Washington, DC has a locally recognized holiday that is celebrated called Emancipation Day and is celebrated on April 16th. By federal law, DC holidays are considered federal holidays. If the 16th falls on a weekend, then many local offices are closed on the 17th. This would make the official tax day the 18th.

If the 16th falls on a weekday, then tax day is the usual April 15th.

Okay. Nevermind I did claim the standard deduction. It was more than my total earnings, but I still owed money. I think that is because you have to still pay your personal income tax, and only the employer side gets zeroed out?

I was actually thinking of the Earned Income Credit, which was really high last year for me, but not this year.

 

I live in FL, so no state income tax, but yeah everyone has to pay FICA regardless of how much income they make. Wish we could pay a smaller amount if our income was below a certain level, but at least it goes towards increasing our social security benefits. That is if they're still available by the time we retire....

Yep this killed me this year

I didn't have to pay anything last year bc of the EIC & this year I owed a lot, plus they lowered the standard deduction

 

Yeah, dude same. It (the EIC) was super high last year. This year it only cleared about half of my self employment tax, which has been the norm for me all other years.

 

Actually they didn't lower the Standard Deduction.. that's not the other thing that got me this year. I can't remember what the other thing was any more

The main thing that killed me was the EIC tho...
